Starman Optical is acquiring GoPro for $285 million, taking approximately 90% ownership of the action camera maker and assuming nearly $92 million in debt. The deal marks a significant strategic shift for GoPro beyond its core consumer camera business.
GoPro will continue selling action cameras and cloud subscription services, but the company will now also commercialize Starman's optical transceivers—high-speed data transmission components increasingly critical for AI data centers. This addition positions GoPro to capitalize on the growing demand for infrastructure supporting large-scale AI operations.
Investors responded positively to the announcement, with GoPro's stock price jumping more than 50% following the deal's disclosure.
