Google won an auction to purchase the digital assets of Spirit Airlines, the now-defunct carrier that ceased operations in May. The tech giant paid $10 million for access to a massive dataset that includes 100 million emails, 537.5 million records from Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint, plus more than 45 million customer service call recordings and chat logs.
The acquisition will give Google extensive training material for its AI models, though the deal still requires judicial approval. Before any data transfer occurs, personal information must be stripped from the records to protect individual privacy. The company is leveraging the detailed business communications and customer interaction logs—valuable for training language models on real-world workplace and service scenarios.
