Google Reveals "Aluminium OS": The Future of Android on Desktops

Leaked images and videos have provided the first look at Google’s new operating system, internally codenamed Aluminium OS. Found via a bug report in the Chromium project, the leak showcases a system designed to unify the best of Android and ChromeOS.

Key Features of Aluminium OS

The system was spotted running on Android 16 via a 12th Gen Intel Chromebook. The interface is specifically optimized for large screens and desktop environments:

  • Desktop Interface: Features a centralized taskbar, a taller status bar, and a larger mouse cursor.
  • Window Management: Traditional "Close," "Minimize," and "Maximize" buttons are present, supporting side-by-side multitasking.
  • Unified Ecosystem: The OS integrates ChromeOS elements into Android, allowing for Chrome browser extensions alongside full Play Store app support.

The Strategy: Merging Android and ChromeOS

This leak confirms Google’s strategic shift to consolidate its operating systems. By building a desktop-capable version of Android, Google aims to replace ChromeOS gradually.

While the system is in advanced internal testing, Google has not yet announced an official commercial name or release date. Aluminium OS is expected to power future laptops and tablets, offering a seamless experience across the Google ecosystem.
