Google has cancelled its standalone AI Studio mobile app before launch, despite nearly 800,000 users pre-registering on Android and iOS. The app, announced in May, was designed to let developers create, iterate, test, and publish AI-powered applications directly from their smartphones—complete with app remixing and project syncing across devices.
Rather than release the separate application, Google is folding its core capabilities into Gemini. The shift means app creation will happen within conversations with the AI assistant itself, eliminating the need to install additional software. The company is collaborating between its AI Studio and Gemini teams to bring this experience to both mobile and desktop, though a specific launch date for mobile hasn't been announced yet.
The web version of AI Studio will continue receiving development investment and won't be affected by the cancellation. Google acknowledged that the pre-registration numbers validated demand for mobile app development tools and stated that more implementation details will surface as the Gemini integration progresses.
