The European Union reached a new milestone in clean energy: renewable sources generated 54% of total electricity in the second quarter of 2025, up from 52.7% in the same period last year.
Breakdown by Energy Source
The growth was driven primarily by solar power, which dominated the renewable mix:
- Solar: 36.8%
- Wind: 29.5%
- Hydroelectric: 26%
- Biomass: 7.3%
- Geothermal: 0.4%
Denmark Leads the Pack
Among EU member states, Denmark topped the rankings with an impressive 94.7% of electricity from renewable sources.
This 1.3 percentage point increase year-over-year demonstrates the bloc's steady progress toward decarbonization goals, with solar energy emerging as the clear frontrunner in the transition.
