CSS-Tricks Goes Independent Again: Here's How It Plans to Stay Afloat

CSS-Tricks, one of the web's most influential front-end development resources, is returning to independence after being acquired by DigitalOcean in 2022. Geoff Graham, who has worked on the site for 12 years, is taking over as the new owner.

The site will fund itself through three main revenue streams: advertising packages, a membership program, and a beginner-focused course on HTML and CSS. These approaches reflect a deliberate shift toward direct reader support rather than reliance on a corporate parent.

Not everyone is optimistic about the plan. Some in the developer community worry that AI-powered search tools and content generation have already eroded traffic to educational sites, making it harder to generate meaningful ad revenue. This skepticism underscores a broader challenge facing independent technical publishers: how to build sustainable business models when free AI alternatives can answer many of the same questions.
