A student has lost access to his iPhone after a recent Apple software update removed a specific diacritical mark from the keyboard. Connor Byrne used the háček (ˇ), a character found in Baltic and Slavic languages, as part of his alphanumeric lock screen password.
Following the update to iOS 16.4, the character is no longer available to be typed on the login screen, effectively locking Byrne out of his device. Apple Support stated that the only solution is a factory reset, which would result in the permanent loss of sentimental photos that were not backed up to the cloud.
This incident highlights a critical flaw in how keyboard updates can impact device security and data accessibility for users with multilingual passwords.
