Anthropic to Pay $1.5 Billion Settlement to Authors

Anthropic has agreed to pay a total of $1.5 billion in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson. They claimed Anthropic unlawfully used their literary works to train its Claude chatbot language models. Justin Nelson, the authors' attorney, emphasized the settlement's significance: "This sends a powerful message to AI companies and creators that sourcing copyrighted works from pirated sites is wrong."

During the lawsuit, it was revealed that Anthropic possessed an estimated 7 million pirated books. The plaintiffs initially sought $150,000 per work, amounting to an astronomical sum. However, U.S. Judge William Alsup deemed the usage "excessively transformative," averting a higher penalty for Anthropic. The judge still allowed the specific case of these three authors to proceed. The settlement helped both parties avoid a prolonged legal battle.
