Amazon has begun internal efforts to rehire professionals who were laid off over the past year, focusing particularly on talent specialized in artificial intelligence and cloud services. The strategy became public through emails from the human resources department obtained by Business Insider and confirmed directly by a company spokesperson. This reversal follows the tech giant's layoffs that exceeded 30,000 positions since October 2025, which were justified as streamlining corporate bureaucracy and reorganizing operational teams. However, recent cuts to the general artificial intelligence division, combined with the accelerated pace of market innovation, prompted the company to reopen dialogue with former technical collaborators to enable ongoing strategic projects.
The process, internally dubbed the "boomerang" movement, involves coordination from high-level executives, including Amazon Web Services Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian. Company leadership argues that reintegrating former employees allows them to resume complex demands without the learning curve required for new professionals. Officially, company representatives maintain that these outreach efforts are not exclusively targeting those laid off during restructuring waves, but also aim to attract specialists who voluntarily resigned after Amazon imposed an in-office requirement five days per week. Similar reintegrations have already occurred in the financial sector and AWS infrastructure marketplace teams.
