Amazon has officially asked the Federal Communications Commission (CC) to reject a new proposal by SpaceX to operate data centers in space.
The Proposal SpaceX filed a request on January 30 seeking approval to deploy a fleet of up to 1 million satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). These satellites would function as orbital data centers, expanding the capabilities of the Starlink network.
Amazon’s Objections Amazon argues that the SpaceX filing lacks critical technical information and safety assessments. Key concerns raised in the protest include:
- Interference: Lack of clarity on how the massive fleet will avoid disrupting existing satellite signals.
- Collision Risks: Potential for increased space debris and orbital congestion.
- Environmental Impact: Concerns regarding rocket launch pollution.
- Atmospheric Waste: The effects of satellite disposal and chemical residue from re-entry burn-ups.
This move marks the latest clash between the two tech giants as they compete for dominance in the burgeoning space-based internet and infrastructure market.
