AI data centers in the United States are projected to quadruple their energy consumption by 2035, reaching 20% of all electricity generated in the country. Currently consuming around 4.4 terawatt-hours annually, this explosive growth reflects the massive computational demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The scale extends globally as well. Outside the US, data centers could add nearly 1.9 terawatt-hours to worldwide electricity demand by 2033—a volume comparable to India's entire annual energy consumption of 1.8 TWh. This staggering requirement underscores the infrastructure challenges facing the AI industry and raises critical questions about energy sustainability and grid capacity as AI adoption accelerates worldwide.
