Artificial intelligence data centers in the United States consume up to 12 times more water than corporate reports typically disclose. Most technology firms only track direct water consumption, which refers to the water used cooling servers on-site, while ignoring the massive amounts of water utilized by power plants to generate the electricity these facilities require.
This lack of transparency masks the true ecological impact of the AI boom. While most players remain silent on their indirect footprint, Meta has broken the mold by revealing that its indirect water consumption reached 71.9 billion liters in 2024, a figure more than 20 times higher than its direct usage. The reliance on water-heavy energy sources creates a significant sustainability gap that current reporting standards fail to capture.
