Minecraft Java Edition Switching from OpenGL to Vulkan

Minecraft Java Edition is undergoing a major technical update. For the first time since its launch, the game will replace OpenGL with Vulkan as its primary graphics API.

Why the Change?

The shift is necessary to ensure the game remains compatible and performant on modern hardware. OpenGL has not received an update in nine years, making it increasingly difficult to support on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Vulkan offers a more modern framework, providing better stability and long-term support across all operating systems.

When is it Happening?

The migration process is scheduled to begin between June and September.

What to Expect

Players won’t be forced to switch immediately. During the initial rollout, users will be able to toggle between OpenGL and Vulkan within the game’s experimental versions (Snapshots). This allows the community to test performance and report bugs before Vulkan becomes the permanent standard.
