GitHub CEO: Manual Coding Remains Essential Despite AI Advancements

In a time when artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly integrated into software development, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has emphasized the ongoing importance of manual programming. According to Dohmke, while AI tools like GitHub Copilot can significantly assist developers, they should not replace foundational coding skills.

Speaking to Tech in Asia, Dohmke stressed that developers must retain the ability to understand and modify the code generated by AI models. “Being able to edit and fine-tune what the AI produces is not just useful—it’s critical,” he said.

He also warned that relying too heavily on AI could, in some cases, reduce productivity. As an example, he pointed out the inefficiency of using natural language to explain simple code changes when it would be quicker and more effective to make the adjustments directly in the script.

Dohmke’s remarks highlight the need for balance: AI can enhance the development process, but it shouldn’t become a crutch. Developers are encouraged to use these tools as companions—not substitutes—for their expertise.

As the role of AI continues to evolve in the tech industry, Dohmke’s insights serve as a reminder that core programming knowledge remains a vital skill for current and future developers.
