Apple has issued surprise updates for several discontinued iOS versions, including iOS 12.5.8, 15.8.6, and 16.7.13.
Unlike standard updates, these patches do not offer new features or fix security vulnerabilities. Instead, they renew a security certificate set to expire in January 2027.
Why you should update: If these older devices are not updated, essential Apple services will stop functioning. Key services affected include:
- iMessage
- FaceTime
- Apple Account login (Apple ID)
iOS 12 was officially discontinued in 2023, while support for iOS 15 and 16 ended in 2025. According to Ars Technica, this maintenance ensures that users on legacy hardware remain connected to the Apple ecosystem.
Users with compatible older devices are encouraged to install these updates immediately via Settings > General > Software Update.
